Christie Gillies Park

Civil Service Strollers 1-2 Berwick Rangers

6th August 2024

Arran LAIDLAW's spectacular 80th minute volley helped give Berwick the win this evening, which maintained their 100% start to the 2024/25 Lowland League campaign.  Following a slightly dull first-half. during which neither side shone, the visitors took the lead ten minutes after the break through Liam BUCHANAN - a chap whom I remember fondly from his spell with the 2011 First Division title-winning Dunfermline Athletic side.

Strollers enjoyed their best period in the match after this setback, although their deserved equaliser had more than a touch of good fortune about it, as an attempted clearance by Rangers' defender Lewis Barr cannoned off a home player into the net.

Strollers carved out a couple of half-chances after this equaliser, both before and after the visitors had regained the lead.  But they never really troubled a Rangers side admirably marshalled by captain Jamie McCormack.

Christie Gillies Park is accessed off Marine Drive in the north of Edinburgh...

...and shares the grounds with The World of Football facilities.

So, first you enter by this gate to the left of the main buildings...

...then roond a wee corner...

...up this lane..

...'till you find a cheery man in a booth.

Tidy, if a touch basic, seating is available for folks of  a certain vintage such as myself,
who finds standing for 90 minutes a bit of a chore.

I had visited Stroller's ground once before, back in 1999 when it was known as Muirhouse Sports Ground, and the team played on what was, to all intents and purposes, simply an area of roped-off field.

This field still exists today, but the club have taken up residence at a enclosed developed area on the south-west corner of the sports ground.  This has been been named Christie Gillies Park after Bill Christie and Ken Gillies; both honorary officials of the club and, I am guessing, individuals with a lengthy association with the history of Civil Service Strollers FC.
