Shinty Grounds (N-U)

Newtonmore Camanachd
The Eilan, Newtonmore

Newtonmore are Kingussie's great rivals from just doon the road, with 34 Camanachd Cup wins to date, nine ahead of Kingussie's tally of 25.  Only Kyle Athletic's record comes close to matching that of shinty's "Old Firm".

Oban Camanachd &  Oban Celtic
Mossfield Park, Oban

Whilst pretty much all of the small shinty grounds I found to be easily accessible, the larger ones (here, Dunoon and Fort William) I found stubbornly locked and bolted.  Consequently, obtaining any decent shots of the ground was a challenge.  I maybe need to return on a match day, should I happen to be passing!

Mossfield Stadium is shared by the town's two shinty clubs Oban Celtic and Oban Camanachd.  The latter club is the older, and have generally been the more successful over recent years.

Skye Camanachd
Pairc nan Loach, Portree

It was a bit of a trek to reach this one, but visiting Skye is always a pleasure.

Strachur-Dunoon Shinty Club
Strachurmore Sports Centre, Strachur

This is one of the grounds used by the Strachur-Dunoon coalition.  In marked contrast to Dunoon Stadium, the Strachurmore Sports Centre is an understated wooden hut hidden away up a narrow lane.

Not that this fact appeared to deter the locals, for the centre looked well used inside.  Perhaps there was a bar?

Strathglass Shinty Club
The Playing Fields, Cannich

I loved the bespoke carved seat here installed, I assume, in commemoration of former player Lawrence Jones who died in 2019.

Strathspey Camanachd
Grantown Secondary School, Grantown-on-Spey

Relative newcomers to the senior leagues, joining as recently as 2012.  The club presently play at the Craig Maclean Leisure Centre which is associated with the local secondary school.

Tayforth

Taynuilt Shinty Club (and Cruachanside Camanachd)
The Sports Field, Taynuilt

This ground is presently being used by Inverness Camanachd whilst Bught Park is being redeveloped.  It had previously been home for many years to Taynuilt Shinty Club.  And the ground continued to be used when Taynuilt merged with Glenorchy to form Cruachanside in 2022.  But this outfit lasted only one season before folding, leaving both villages of Taynuilt and Dalmally without a senior shinty club.

Uddingston Shinty Club

Uddingston Shinty Club play on the grass pitch at Stepps Playing fields in the north-east of Glasgow.  The ground is presently owned by Strathclyde University.
