Built as the main venue for the 1972 Munich Olympics, the ground also hosted the 1974 World Cup Final. The city's two biggest football clubs Bayern Munich and 1860 Munich moved in soon after the olympics, the pair sharing the ground until they relocated to the newly built Alliance Arena in 2005.
However, in 2017, 1860 Munich permanently moved out of the Alliance, returning to the Grünwalder Stadium where they had sporadically played their home matches since 1911.
The Olympiastadion no longer hosts football on a regular basis, although Türkgücü München briefly called the place home from 2020-22. It is nowadays primarily used for athletics and the occasional concert.
