Sale Sharks 21-26 Glasgow Warriors
6th December 2025
Glasgow Warriors took a bonus-point win back north, through the (relatively) straightforward tactic of making fewer mistakes than their hosts, during an error strewn match played in foul conditions. The game was played in incessant drizzle, with a gale howling down the pitch.
Sale began the match with the not inconsiderable wind at their backs, and within twenty minutes were 14-0 up, Ernst VAN RHYN and teenage debutant Ollie DAVIES both scoring converted tries.
Warriors' Gregor HIDDLESTON pulled five points back on the half-hour, before Rory DARGE's converted try took the score to 14-12 at the break.
When Kyle STEYN danced through the home defence moments after the restart to put his side ahead, one could almost feel the self-belief of the Sharks (who had squandered a 20 point lead the previous week) begin to ebb away.
More missed tackles by the home lot allowed Stafford McDOWALL, playing in his hundredth match for Glasgow, to touch down for his side's fourth try, as Warriors opened up a 26-14 advantage. Although, with a quarter of an hour remaining, Marius LOUW brought his side within a converted try of the lead.
In the dying moments, Sale had a line-out deep within the Glasgow half. But the throw sailed way over the lineout (why do hookers do this?), and Glasgow were able to run down the clock to record a more than decent win.
And, just to round off a great weekend, I later watched Edinburgh also get their European Champions Cup campaign off to a winning start with a 33-20 victory over Toulon.
Edinburgh v Glasgow in Bilbao come May, anyone?
