Berlin Olympiastadion

Hertha Berlin 1-1 Hoffenheim

2nd October 2022

Hertha (on their way to being relegated come the end of the season) and Hoffenheim played out a draw at the capital.

The visitors' Croatian striker Andrej KRAMARIC opened the scoring after 25 minutes, the former Leicester City man diverting in Ozan Kabac's shot.  I thought the scorer looked offside, but clearly not.  Hertha equalised 12 minutes later through Dodi LUKÉBAKIO.  Kramaric later hit a crossbar, but 1-1 the match finished.

The Berlin Olympiastadion was, of course, the venue for the now infamous 1936 Olympic Games.  Much of the interior has been redeveloped since, but there is enough of the old architecture remains to remind one of the venue's past.  Including the original, now cracked, bell from the observation tower built on the site for the 1936 games.

The stadium was used during the 1974 World Cup but, playing host to all three of Chile's group matches.  It is a common misconception today, that the West Germany v East Germany match from the same group was played here.  That game actually took place in Hamburg.

Germany did defeat Argentina here in the 2006 World Cup quarter-finals.  In 2024 the stadium will host six Euro2024 ties including the final.
