Old Anniesland

Glasgow High Kelvinside 69-21 Kirkcaldy

19th October 2025

Sometimes when you watch a rugby match, you occasionally witness a contest between two generally well-matched pair of teams which end up with a large winning margin for one side or the other.  Perhaps due to one lot running in a late try or two, against tiring opponents.

This encounter was, most certainly NOT one of those.  This afternoon, I would suggest, poor Kirkcaldy actually got off lightly.  The defeat was "only" by 48 points because the visitors scored one of their tries (the opening one of the match!) early on, and another with the final play of the game.
In between they were pretty much bossed, bullied and bashed by a GHK side who each looked just that important touch fitter and faster than their opponents.

I lost count of the number of tries GKH scored - was it nine, ten or even eleven?  I have no idea.  Although I did count the nippy Ben HUTTON going over for four of them.

So - a bad, bad day at the office for the Fifers, but a decidedly good one for GHK who leapfrogged Highland to top spot in the league, following the latter's defeat at Newton Stewart earlier in the day.

GHK v Kirkcaldy - October 2025

Kirkcaldy's Kieran Mitchell opened the scoring with a try in the 13th minute.

The stand, named the Jimmie Ireland Stand in memory of former pupil and
former Scottish rugby internationalist and referee, James Ireland was opened in 2000,
replacing an older, larger structure.

Kirkcaldy's second try scored by Seb Evans.

Even the GHK replacements got in on the try-scoring fest.
I think this is Adam Kennedy crossing.

...and another one.

It appeared, for a spell, that every time I looked up another home try was being scored.

Visiting Alan Pratt looked a forlorn wee soul for much of the match.

As with a number of current rugby clubs in Glasgow, GHK are the result of a merger - in this case of Glasgow High School FP and Kelvinside Academicals, back in 1982, with Old Anniesland having been the former's home turf since 1902.
