Firhill

Partick Thistle 1-0 Stenhousemuir

18th December 1999

Firhill for Thrills, they say.  Or the Daily Record does anyway, although I think the phrase owes its existence more to alliterative convenience than any basis in fact.  The few times I have watched Partick Thistle play at Firhill have been deadly dull affairs.  And such was this.

To be fair, Thistle did not have to be much more than competent to see off a vapid Stenhousemuir side, this afternoon.

The only goal was scored by Swede Peter LINDAU on 25 minutes, after he had been put through by Paul McIntyre.  Lindau lofted the ball over the advancing visiting ‘keeper Lyndsay Hamilton who, I felt, made the scorer’s task simpler than it should have been by going to ground rather early.

Partick Thistle did win my prize for the best programme cover on my travels, with a picture of Namibian-born winger Quinton Jacobs hugging a snowman.  Great !

Firhill Stadium - Partick Thistle - 1999

Same view in 2021 - that 1927 on the gable needs a touch of paint.
The date refers, not to the formation of the club, but when the stand itself was constructed.

Same view in 2021 - sort of.  The trees had grown to an extent that
they obscured the whole stand, from the same spot as 1999's pic.

By 2021, the South Terracing has completely disappeared, to be replaced with nothing.
Other than a few advertising hoardings.

...and in 2021.
The stand is used to house away supporters these days.

Firhill Road.

The entry price here, would suggest it has been a long time
since anyone paid to enter Firhill by this gate.

Even with a mask, the Partick Thistle mascot Kingsley still looks
one of the freakiest I have ever seen.

Purely by coincidence, I turned up at Firhill on the 50th Anniversary of
perhaps the greatest ever shock in Scottish Football:
Thistle defeating Celtic 4-1 in the 1971 Scottish League Cup Final
